We have so much to do and plan! I am very proud
of the staff and students’ achievement in obtaining an API score of 833
during the 2011-12 school year. Our goal for this year is to reach
840. We will continue to provide acceleration and intervention for our
students in grades 3-8th. Our intervention teachers, Ms.
Nunez and Ms. Martinelli, will continue to work with our students that
need extra support. Our classroom teachers are focusing on the
“essential standards”. The California Standards Test is a statewide
assessment to see if our students are meeting these standards. This is a
test that we “teach to" since this test is based on the CA state
curriculum that our students are to learn. However, because there are
so many standards per grade level we must focus on the “essential” or
most important standards.
Our testing will begin towards the end
of April and through mid-May. Testing can be a very stressful
situation for the staff and students! We try very hard to reduce this
stress. We offer free breakfast snacks to all students (brain food). I
also provide gum for our students; there is research that says it helps
them focus. Whether or not one believes this, it makes testing time a
little more special! We try to test Tuesday through Thursday if at all
possible, reducing the stress on Mondays and Fridays. The staff does a
great job of making test preparation fun using various cooperative
learning strategies that seem like games!
As a parent, I always struggled with
having my son take these test and adding such stress. However,
throughout his academic career he has had to take tests: the SATs, ACTs,
CBEST, etc. He still uses test-taking strategies he learned from Ms.
Cook, Ms. Spencer and Ms. Rigozin, retired teachers from our district.
Why is test taking important to our
school and our district? Ida Jew Academies has a 5-year charter. We
will need to renew our charter in 2014, and we must show academic
progress through state testing in order to show growth. The Mt. Pleasant
School District is a “Title I” district due to the high percentage of
low socio-economic families. We qualify for federal funding in several
schools. The No Child Left Behind Act requires districts and schools to
show academic progress in order to qualify for federal funds.
It is very important that all our
students take the STS and CST exams in order for us to show academic
growth. The next few months we will continue to instruct and teach our
students the essential CA standards in order to prepare them for the
testing which will begin the end of April and May. Please help your
children feel confident and assure them that we only want them to try
their hardest and do their best. We believe all our students will grow
academically this year! We thank you for your support helping our

Tenemos mucho que hacer y planificar.
Estoy muy orgullosa del personal y de los estudiantes ya que obtuvieron
API de 833 durante el año escolar 2011-12. Nuestra meta para este año es
llegar a 840. Seguiremos proporcionando intervención y aceleración para
los estudiantes de 3º a 8º grado. Nuestras maestras de intervención la
Sra. Núñez y la Srita. Martinelli seguirán trabajando con los
estudiantes que necesitan ayuda adicional. Nuestros maestros se enfocan
en las "normas esenciales". La Prueba de Estándares de California es una
evaluación estatal para ver si nuestros estudiantes están cumpliendo
con estas normas. Necesitamos dar instrucción basada en la prueba porque
este es el curriculum del estado de California que los estudiantes
deben aprender. Sin embargo, debido a que hay tantos estándares por
grado, debemos concentrarnos en las normas"esenciales" o las más
importantes.
Nuestras pruebas se iniciarán a
finales de abril y hasta mediados de mayo. ¡La prueba puede ser una
situación muy estresante para el personal y los estudiantes! Intentamos
reducir este estrés. Ofrecemos refrigerios de desayuno gratis a todos
los estudiantes (alimento para el cerebro). También ofrezco chicle para
nuestros estudiantes; hay investigaciones que dicen que les ayuda a
concentrarse. ¡Independientemente de si uno cree esto o no, hace que el
tiempo de pruebas sea un poco más especial! Tratamos de tener las
pruebas de martes a jueves, si es posible, reduciendo la presión los
lunes y los viernes. ¡El personal hace un buen trabajo en hacer la
preparación para las pruebas más divertida utilizando diversas
estrategias de aprendizaje cooperativo que parecen juegos!
Como una madre, siempre debatía acerca
de tener a mi hijo tomar estas pruebas y añadir estrés. Sin embargo, a
través de su carrera académica, ha tenido que tomar varias pruebas:
SATs, ACTs, CBEST, etc. Él sigue utilizando estrategias de pruebas que
aprendió de la Sra. Cook, la Sra. Spencer y la Sra.Rigozin, maestras
jubiladas de nuestro distrito.
¿Por qué es importante tomar exámenes
en nuestra escuela y nuestro distrito? Ida Jew Academias tiene un
permiso de cinco años. Tendremos que renovar nuestro permiso en 2014, y
tenemos que demostrar progreso académico através de las pruebas
estatales para mostrar crecimiento académico. El Distrito Mt. Pleasant
es un distrito llamado "Título I" debido al alto porcentaje de familias
de bajo nivel socioeconómico. Calificamos para fondos federales en
varias escuelas. El Acto de Que Ningún Niño Se Quede Atrás requiere que
los distritos y las escuelas demuestren progreso académico con el fin de
calificar para fondos federales.
Es muy importante que todos nuestros
estudiantes tomen los exámenes de STS y CST para que podamos demostrar
el crecimiento académico. En los próximos meses vamos a seguir
instruyendo y enseñando a nuestros estudiantes las normas esenciales de
CA con el fin de prepararlos para las pruebas que comenzarán a finales
de abril y mayo. Por favor ayude a los niños a sentirse seguros y
asegúreles que sólo queremos que pongan todo su empeño y hagan lo mejor
posible. ¡Creemos que todos nuestros estudiantes tendrán crecimiento
